P for PATHETIC. Today, I picked up a 24 hour blood pressure monitor. This is the third unit I have had and two of them in the past were faulty (one from another supplier). I therefore told the Canberra Pathology nurse in Goulburn this morning that she is to make sure that the device is working properly, that the batteries are inserted correctly and that high quality, fresh batteries are used. The unit worked intermittently and at 4:00 pm it stopped working altogether. When I called Capital Pathology in Goulburn at 4:45 pm they had already gone home so that I called their head office in Canberra who also told me that their pathology staff had left. No one could provide advice regarding this device. I told the woman on the phone that I wanted a $60 refund for renting this useless device. She put me through to Matt for a refund. However, he was unable to assist. Bla, bla, bla. Why transfer me if he can't assist with a refund? The batteries of this BP monitor were loose, and after inserting them correctly, the device worked again. They used sticky tape, yes, sticky tape in an attempt to keep the battery case closed. Why rent out defective and/or poorly designed BP monitors? There was no after hours service (not that 4:45 pm is considered after hours) to be able to find out whether the data stored from the morning had been erased or not. Should I continue monitoring or just hand it back? What a useless device and what a useless company. Also, on the last two occasions when I gave blood for pathology requests, they argued with me and refused to give me my lab results. The Privacy Act is clear in that Capital Pathology cannot deny me the data, my data, that they hold. The Act firstly makes sure that my data is protected from unauthorized access and secondly guarantees me that I can access my data that is held anywhere in Australia. But they quoted this Act in error claiming that I should go to my GP for the results and that due to the Privacy Act they could not give me the data. This is absurd. They did finally give me the results after I made a huge fuss. Even worse, after Adam from admin told me to pick up my lab results from Gungahlin, he was told by admin not to fax them there. Instead of calling me and telling me this, I drove there with the expectation of getting my results. Guess what? They refused. NO COURTESY, NO BRAINS! BUT YES TO POOR SERVICE. I WASTED MY TIME DRIVING TO GUNGAHLIN AND WASTED MORE THAN AN HOUR ARGUING WITH THESE PEOPLE BEFORE I EVENTUALLY GOT MY RESULTS. I also remember ON at least two occasions where I gave blood. A few days later I got a call because they did not draw sufficient blood to do all the tests. Next time I went in for blood tests, I told the nurse to make sure that they draw enough blood. Guess what? A few days later I got another call that they required more blood again as the pathology nurse didn't get enough of it. What kind of a company is this who provide misleading information regarding the Privacy Act, rent out faulty BP monitoring devices, and they mislead people as to refunds and where I can pick up my lab results. This sort of poor service and apathy for a patient, is demeaning.
